• May is named after Maia, the Roman goddess of growth and spring. It’s a month often associated with blooming flowers and warmer weather.

• The Kentucky Derby, known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” is traditionally held on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It’s the oldest continuously held major sporting event in the United States, first run in 1875.

• The Kentucky Derby is famous for its tradition of mint juleps, extravagant hats, and the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home” just before the race starts.

• The Indianapolis 500, often called the Indy 500, takes place annually on Memorial Day weekend (the last weekend in May) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. It’s one of the oldest and most prestigious automobile races in the world, first held in 1911.

• The Indy 500 is sometimes referred to as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and features 200 laps around a 2.5-mile oval track, totaling 500 miles.

• Both the Kentucky Derby and the Indy 500 are part of the “Triple Crown of Motorsport” along with the Monaco Grand Prix.

• May is also recognized as National Mental Health Awareness Month and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in the United States.
